Dr Antoine Depage, a leading European surgeon, was the founder of the Training School for Nurses in Brussels of which Nurse Cavell was ‘Directrice’. His wife, Marie, also played an important role in the founding of the School. She acted as Secretary to her husband, supporting his work and became a firm friend of Edith Cavell.

Marie played an important role in fundraising for the School and was especially successful on a trip to America. On her return she was aboard the SS Lusitania and was drowned when it was torpedoed in May 1915.
