Regimental History > Introduction
What is a Regiment?

The British Army is divided up into a number of regiments, which are administrative units. From 1782 these had a geographical affiliation. Each regiment is led by a Colonel.

Regiments vary in size at different times but each consists of one or more fighting units called battalions. In 1803 the Norfolk Regiment had one battalion, in 1915 it had eight battalions on active service overseas. Battalions are led by Lieutenant Colonels.

Within battalions of between 600-1200 men there are Companies of 80 to 120 men commanded by a Captain or Major. Within a Company there are Platoons of 25- 40 men commanded by a 2nd Lieutenant or Lieutenant and within Platoons, Sections led by Corporals of sergeants.
