Marriage: Overseas Service

Only a few women were able to go with the regiment when it was sent abroad. This caused great hardship for those left behind who had to support themselves and their children. Some women followed the regiment even if they weren't given official permission. These women had to travel by themselves over long distances without support.

A soldier could not be forced by law to look after his wife and children. Some married men joined up to in order to desert their family.
