Supplementary Pay

Many soldiers supplemented their wages by using their trade, such as carpentry, shoemaking and tailoring. Men could also earn extra by being mess waiters or officers' servants. Such opportunities gradually increased.

Good conduct pay was introduced in 1836 and was increased on several occasions, but it was not until 1902 that soldiers' pay radically improved.
