Coin hoard from Honingham

In times of danger, people in the past often buried their savings to prevent them being stolen or looted. The Honingham hoard is an example of one such collection that was never recovered by its owner. Were they killed before they could recover their treasure? Or did they simply forget where exactly it had been buried?

The hoard is made up of 341 Iron Age silver coins, made in the decades leading through into the 40s AD, that had been buried in a small Roman buff-ware pot. They were probably buried in about 60AD when Queen Boudica led a revolt against Roman rule.
