Prasutagus was Queen Boudica’s husband, and was the leader of the Iceni tribe who lived in East Anglia. Under his leadership the Iceni had a favoured position with the Romans and were allowed to rule themselves. When Prasutagus died the Romans placed the Iceni under their own direct rule, which sparked off Queen Boudica’s revolt in 60AD. This coin shows how Roman coins had influenced those of the native British population, using inscriptions, in this case ‘PRASTO’, next to a bust of the man. The coin was found as part of a spread of Iron Age coins from Fincham and dates from about 40-50AD.
