'Off the Strength'

Wives and children 'off the strength' were not officially recognised and the army made no allowance for them. They had to support themselves and lived extremely hard, sometimes desperate lives.

Regimental schools for children

It was in education that the army made most impact on soldiers' children. Regimental schools gave them the opportunity of a regular education enjoyed by few other children of the working class.
