The Royal Sanitary Commission of 1857

There was a series of government enquiries after the Crimean War. The British public had been shocked by reports of the terrible conditions faced by soldiers described by the first war correspondent of The Times, William Russell.

The most influential of these enquiries was the Royal Sanitary Commission of 1857 which followed a brief written by Florence Nightingale.
