Fitness and Sport in the Army: Introduction

Until the middle of the 19th century a soldier's physical fitness was considered his own business as long as he presented himself on parade in uniform and ready to serve.

Because the soldier had often joined due to unemployment and poverty or lack of a trade, the level of physical fitness was poor.
