Sport

Concern about the health of soldiers grew during the Crimean War and steps were taken to improve their fitness.

Sport not only improved fitness, it helped reduce boredom and encouraged sobriety. Some martial sports, such as boxing and shooting overlapped with training. Team games encouraged the esprit de corps essential in an efficient fighting unit.
