Physical Training

In 1862 the government made money available for every garrison to have a reading room and gymnasium built. The following year, a uniform system of gymnastics was instituted and by 1868 every regiment had a physical training instructor. Originally, training was designed to make the soldier strong rather than supple and used equipment such as Indian clubs and dumb-bells.
